Smith Defeats WPI To Advance To NEWMAC Final

February 25, 2012

Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.--Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) had 16 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocked shots as Smith College defeated Worcester Polytechnic Insitute 70-51 to advance to the finals of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference women's basketball tournament on Saturday afternoon.  The win set a new single season record for victories and marked the first 20 win season in school history.

The Pioneers (20-5) will play Babson College (24-2) in the final on Sunday at 1 p.m.  The winner receives an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.  It's the second straight year the two schools have met in the tournament title game - in 2011, Babson defeated Smith 74-49.

Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) added 13 points and eight rebounds, and Maddie Page (Arvada, Colo./Jefferson Acad.) had 10 points, knocking down a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line.

WPI maintained the lead for the majority of the first 13 minutes of play, including an eight-point cushion after a three-pointer by McNally made it 17-9 with 12:39 left in the first half. Smith gradually chipped away at the deficit before moving in front, 21-20, on a Page lay-up at the seven-minute mark, and the Pioneers later closed the half with a 7-1 run to take a 34-27 lead into the break.

Drummond had seven points and five rebounds in the opening period for Smith, while Davis had six points and seven boards for the Engineers.

The Pioneers never relinquished the lead in the second half, although WPI did cut it to four after consecutive lay-ins by Logan and Hannmann made it 37-33 with 16:17 left in the game. From there, Smith scored six straight points as part of a 10-2 run that extended its advantage to double-digits, 47-35, with 11:26 remaining. Five different players scored during the burst, highlighted by four points from sophomore Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate).

WPI pulled to within single digits just once more, as a free throw by Mamayek made it 47-38 with 9:13 to go. From there, Smith's lead would surged back to 17 (59-42) with 4:11 left, and the Pioneers' final bucket would result in the 70-51 final - their largest advantage of the afternoon.
