Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) was one of four Smith players in double-figures and
Ellie Giles (Charlottesville, Va./St. Annes Belfield) pulled down a career high 15 rebounds as the Smith College basketball team won for the seventh game in succession with a 68-62 win over Clark University on Wednesday night.
The win sees the Pioneers improve to 17-4, with a 12-3 record in the NEWMAC. The 17 wins match last season's total, tying the second best single season win total in program history. Clark falls to 14-8, and 10-5 in the NEWMAC. Smith now holds the head-to-head tiebreaker should the two teams finish with the same league records.
Down 21-15 after Kate Minister drained a three pointer with 8:12 in the first half, Smith reeled off 14 straight points, starting with a conventional three point play from
Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster). The junior then picked Kelsey Geidymin's pocket and went coast-to-cast for a layup, then fed
Lizzy BelBruno (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) for another basket that made it 22-21.
Maddie Page (Arvada, Colo./Jefferson Acad.) capped the burst with a steal and layup with 3:11 to go, but Clark finished the half on a 10-0 run of their own, taking the lead back on Emily Reilly's three pointer and holding a 31-29 advantage at halftime.
Smith scored 11 of the first 13 points of the second half, punctuated by a hoop from Drummond at the 15:40 mark. The Pioneers led by as many as 13 points when Drummond drained a free throw with 10:03 left in the half.
Clark kept chipping away, getting the lead below double-digits with 8:27 left, and pulling within five when Reilly sank a three with 44 seconds to go. Smith sank five of six free throws to cement the win.
Drummond finished with 19 points, while
Lizzy BelBruno (Hanover, N.H./Hanover) netted 15.
Maddie Page (Arvada, Colo./Jefferson Acad.) tossed in 13, and
Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) added 11. Smith finished with assists on 19 of their 22 baskets, and forced 26 Clark turnovers
Smith will be at No. 18 Babson College on Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. tilt. Clark will host Wheaton College at 1 p.m. on the same day.
