NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The last time the Smith College lacrosse team (5-3, 1-0 NEWMAC) won four consecutive games, no one on the team was older than 10 and head coach
Jen Nardi was heading into her senior year of college. But all that can change with a NEWMAC win over Wheaton College (5-3, 0-1 NEWMAC) on Sunday afternoon.
Last Meeting: Wheaton scored the first six goals of the game and the final seven to deal Smith
a 21-9 defeat on April 2, 2011. Smith
pulled within 14-9 before the Lyons pulled away.
Becky Bracken (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) topped Smith with four goals.
Last Smith Win: Seeded sixth, Smith upset No. 3 seeded Wheaton 10-7 in the quarterfinals of the NEWMAC tournament on April 25, 2007. The Pioneers grabbed a 7-3 lead at halftime and never looked back to advance to the semifinals.
Smith Overview: The Pioneers won their third consecutive game with a 25-4 victory over Elms College on Thursday afternoon. Bracken netted seven goals, while
Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) had five and
Meaghan Fileti (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes) had four goals and four assists.
Wheaton Overview: Wheaton suffered a tough 14-13 double-overtime loss to Springfield on March 24 in their NEWMAC opener. Since then, the Lyons have posted a pair of convincing wins, with a 23-10 win over Salve Regina and a 12-4 win over Bridgewater State. This is only the second home game of the season for Wheaton, who opened the season with six straight road contests.
Smith Player to Watch: Bracken is six goals shy of matching her first year total of 38. With 32 this season, she needs 30 goals in the final eight games of the year (an average of 3.75) to become the second player this season and the sixth overall to reach 100 goals.
Wheaton Player to Watch: Hailey Coburn also has 32 goals this season, along with 16 assists.
