Game Preview: Lacrosse vs. Wellesley

April 14, 2012

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The penultimate game of the NEWMAC season commences at high noon for the Smith College lacrosse team (7-5, 2-2 NEWMAC) when they travel to Wellesley College (4-8, 2-1 NEWMAC).  A win would cement the first berth in the NEWMAC tournament for the Pioneers since 2009.

Last Meeting: Meaghan Fileti (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif./Palos Verdes) scored the first goal of the game, but the Blue ran off the next seven and never looked back in a 20-8 win over the Pioneers on April 16, 2010.

Last Smith Win: Smith has not beaten Wellesley since a 10-8 triumph over the Blue in the semifinals of the NEW8 tournament on April 28, 1994.

Smith Overview:  The Pioneers earned a vital win in the race for a NEWMAC playoff berth with a 13-9 triumph over Mount Holyoke on Tuesday night.  Smith has now won multiple conference games for the first time since 2001, and has the most overall wins since an 8-9 season in 2000.

Wellesley Overview: The Blue snapped a three game losing skid with a 22-14 victory over MIT.  While Wellesley sports a 4-8 record overall, the Blue have suffered four losses by three goals or less, including a 16-15 double-overtime defeat to Lasell and a 10-8 loss to Eastern Connecticut.

Smith Player to Watch: Mckenzie Hessel (Portland, Ore./Wilson) has really come on strong as the year winds down, with 19 goals in her last four games.

Wellesley Player to Watch: First year Claire Canty has scored 31 goals in 12 games, and set up 13 more.

Did you know? With seven goals against Mount Holyoke, Hessel joined teammates Fileti and Becky Bracken (Barrington, R.I./Barrington) with 40+ goals.  Heading into the week of April 8, there were no set of three teammates in all of Division III with 40 or more goals, though there were two sets of two (Ferrum's Courtney Hamm [64] and Brooke Hewartson [59], and Regis' Grace Politis [51] and Teresa Busiek [43]) with 40 or more.
