NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College tennis team was swept by Wellesley College in their season opener by a 9-0 score.  Smith drops to 0-1, and 0-1 in the NEWMAC, while Wellesley improves to 2-0, and 1-0 in the NEWMAC.


Smith came closest to a win at No. 1 singles, where Bayla Weick (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity) took Erica Choo to a tiebreaker before falling 6-3, 2-6, 8-10.  At No. 2 Jordan Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) was downed by Diana Granger by scores of 2-6, 1-6, and Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria/King's Academy) lost to SoJung Lee 0-6, 0-6 at No. 3.

Haruka Shimoto (Tokyo, Japan/International School of the Sacred Heart) lost to Catherine Matulis 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4, as did Kyle Gouchoe-Hanas (Durham, N.C./Carolina Friends) by a score of 1-6, 0-6 at No. 5 to Abby Esrock.  Ashley Burke fell at No. 6 to Suzanne Barth by an 0-6, 1-6 count.

In doubles, the Blue won all three matches, starting with Lee and Granger over Weick and Samawi 0-8 No. 1, and Esrock teamed with Veronica Lin to beat Lindsay Roth and Gouchoe-Hanas by the same score at No. 2. Jana Chan (San Francisco, Calif./The Bay School) and Shimoto lost to Matulus and Barth 2-8 at No. 2.

Smith will next be in action on September 22, traveling to Babson College for a 1 p.m. NEWMAC matchup.
