Stein Shines In Smith Overtime Win

September 18, 2012

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) scored with 10 seconds remaining in the first overtime to lift the Smith College field hockey team to a 2-1 non-conference win over Westfield State University on Tuesday afternoon.  Smith improves to 3-3 with the win, while Westfield State falls to 3-2 with the loss.

Playing a large majority of the game in driving rain and wind, Smith survived being down early and a cagey second half to notch their third straight overtime win, dating back to last season.  Stein has scored the winner in all three games.

The Owls opened the scoring in the first 10 minutes.  A scrum in front of the Smith cage saw the ball end up at the stick of Emily Williams, who tapped in her second goal of the season.

Smith would knot the score before halftime.  Stein redirected Dari Goulden (Rutledge, Pa./Strath Haven)'s corner, and Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) knocked it in to level the scores.  The score remained 1-1 at halftime, but after the break, Smith started to pour on the pressure.

Stein was denied by Westfield goalie Khrystyna Mitchell early in the first half, while Savannah Lawson (Oak Bluffs, Mass./Martha's Vineyard) stoned Sarah Pliszka and Kelly Kinney within 14 seconds in the second half.

Smith handed Westfield State an advantage when Stein was given a yellow card that kept her off the field for 10 minutes, including the final 7:38 of regulation play.  Despite playing down a person, Smith continued to press, earning four penalty corners in the final five minutes, but Mitchell made three saves, including a point blank save on DeJesus to send the game to overtime.

Stein's card carried over to the first 3:31 of overtime, but the Owls could not make the advantage count, despite Plizka hitting the post with five minutes remaining in overtime.

Stein won the game when she carried the ball on the left side of the goal, and snuck a shot into the sideboard with 10 seconds left for her 14th goal of the season.

Lawson finished with eight saves, while Mitchell finished with 14 in net for Westfield State.

Smith will return to NEWMAC play, hosting Springfield College on Saturday, September 22, at 1 p.m. Westfield State will return home to host Elms College on September 20 at 7 p.m.
