Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Smith College scored the first 14 points of the game and never looked back in a 63-39 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win over Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday night.
Smith, which has not lost at home this season, is now 13-2, and 8-1 in the NEWMAC, while WPI is 9-6, and 5-4 against NEWMAC opposition.
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) led all players with 17 points, while adding nine rebounds.
Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) added 15 points, seven boards, and four assists, and
Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate) chipped in 12.
Cindy Chelius led WPI with eight points, as no Engineer player reached double-figures.
Parkmond scored Smith's first two baskets, while WPI misesd their first three shots, and committed four turnovers in the opening five minutes.
Amanda Zakoske (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School)'s fast break layup upposed Smith's lead to 10-0, and after Chelius got the Engineers on the board,
Lauren Weston (Florence, Mass./Northampton)'s putback of a
Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) miss pushed the lead to 16-4.
Back-to-back hoops from Drummond gave Smith a 20-8 lead, and the Pioneers closed the half with a triple from Solis and another basket from Parkmond for a 34-14 lead at halftime. WPI made a mere four baskets in the first half, while committing 15 turnovers.
The Pioneers poured it on in the second half, starting with a 10-3 run and going up by as many as 35 on
Bethany Claps (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Acad.)' layup with 8:52 remaining.
Smith will host MIT in their next contest, a 2 p.m. tip-off on January 19. WPI will travel to cross-city rival Clark, with the game scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
