January 19, 2013

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Familiar faces meet on the court again as the Smith College basketball team (13-2, 8-1 NEWMAC) faces Massachusetts Institute of Technology (7-8, 3-6 NEWMAC) on Saturday.  It's the second meeting of the teams in an 11 day period.

Last Meeting:  Smith toppled the Engineers 63-47 on January 8, 2013, behind 18 points from Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth).  MIT was limited to six baskets in the second half.

Smith Overview: The Pioneers got back to winning ways with a 63-39 win over WPI on Wednesday night.  Smith opened the game on a 14-0 run, and held WPI to four first half field goals.

MIT Overview: MIT has lost four of their last five, including a 61-48 overtime defeat to Wheaton College on Wednesday.  Mari Kordell scored 23 points, but the rest of her teammates combined to score just 35.

Smith Player to Watch: Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate) is scoring a shade under 10 points per game, and is averaging 12.7 per game in her last three contests.  She's also hit all her free throws in the last two games.

MIT Player to Watch: Kordell, last year's NEWMAC Rookie of the Year, is the only Engineer to average double-figures, with 11.2 points per game.

Did you know? Smith boasts the highest scoring offense in the league, at 73.4 points per game, while MIT has the second stingiest defense, giving up just 49.0 points per game.
