Defense Leads Smith Past MIT

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) matched a career high with 20 points and the Smith College basketball team forced 25 turnovers in a 58-46 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference win over Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon.

Smith is now 14-2 overall, and 9-1 in league play, while MIT is 7-9, with a 3-7 NEWMAC ledger. 

Quattrocchi knocked down seven of 12 shots, and both her three pointers while adding three blocks and four steals.  Amanda Zakoske (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) had 11 points and nine boards, going 5-for-5 from the charity stripe.  Maya Ramachandran led MIT with 14 points and 11 rebounds. 

The Pioneers opened up an early 10-4 lead on Amanda Zakoske (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School)'s layup, but MIT battled back with a 9-2 run, capped by two free throws from Sabrina Drammis for a 13-12 lead.  Durve Bhandare's layup with 2:01 left in the first half boosted the Engineers' lead to 24-19, and she sank another layup just ahead of the halftime buzzer for a 29-24 MIT halftime advantage.

Smith started the second half by scoring the first three baskets of the half to take a one point lead, and after Mari Kordell drained a three at the 15:02 mark for a 34-32 lead, Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate) sunk a layup and a free throw to give Smith a lead they would never relinquish. 

Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) drained a three and a layup on the next two Smith possessions, extending the advantage to 40-34, and Smith never looked back, going up by eight on Zakoske's layup with 3:27 to play, and Quattrocchi's three at the with 2:45 to go up by double-digits.


Smith will complete a three game homestand by hosting Mount Holyoke College on Wednesday, January 23, at 7 p.m.  MIT will host Wellesley at 7 p.m. on the same date.
