Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate) scored a career high 16 points, one of four Smith College players in double-figures, as the Pioneers' basketball team rolled to an 82-60 win over Westfield State University on Wednesday evening. Smith has now won seven consecutive games, and is 9-1, while Westfield State sees its three game win streak come to an end, and is now 8-5.
Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) led all scorers with 18 points, while pulling down six rebounds and four steals.
Alyssa Barrett (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) added 11 points off the bench, and
Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) chipped in 10 points and passed out six assists. Sophomore center Gabby Felix led the Owls with 14 points and nine rebounds and sophomore guard Jen Ashton finished with nine points and seven assists. Senior guard Briana Kelly scored 12 points.
The Pioneers' tough defense rattled the Owls in the first half as the visitors raced to a 43-21 intermission lead. Both teams scored 39 second-half points.
Smith jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opening 47 seconds, forcing Westfield to call a timeout. Westfield trailed 12-9 with 13:54 left in the first half then Smith went on a 15-2 run to take a 27-11 lead at the eight-minute mark.
Quattrocchi (10 points), Solis (8 points) and Parkmond (7 points) paced the Pioneers in the first half.
Pounding the ball inside, Westfield pulled to with 12 points, 55-43, with 11:24 left in the game. But two buckets by Parkmond followed by a Quattrocchi jumper and 3-point basket gave Smith a 64-45 lead at the 8:25 mark.
Smith outrebounded Westfield, 50-45, with Drummond grabbing a team-high seven caroms. Smith shot 43 percent form the field (33-76) and handed out 21 assists on 33 baskets.
The Owls cut a 22 point deficit at halftime to 13 points with 4:16 to play, but Smith closed out the game on a 14-7 burst, fueled by back-to-back threes from Barrett and Quattrocchi to salt away the victory.
The Owls shot 34 percent from the field, including a 1 for 8 effort from 3-point range, and committed 24 turnovers.
Smith resumes conference play this Saturday when the Pioneers host Wellesley College at 2 p.m. Westfield State begins MASCAC games with a visit to Salem State at 1 p.m. this Saturday.
