Game Preview: Basketball vs. Mount Holyoke

January 23, 2013

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--A three game homestand concludes for the Smith College basketball team (14-2, 9-1 NEWMAC) when the Pioneers host longtime rival Mount Holyoke College (4-11, 2-8 NEWMAC) on Wednesday evening.  The Pioneers have won the last seven matchups against the Lyons.

Last Meeting: Smith opened NEWMAC play with a 71-50 victory over Mount Holyoke on November 28, 2012.  Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) netted 17 points, while Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) had 11 and Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) had 12.  Smith limited MHC sharpshooter Angelica Pascual to 4-of-22 shooting from the floor, and 0-for-8 from three point range.

Smith Overview: The Pioneers remain in second place in the NEWMAC, one game behind Babson after a 58-46 win over MIT on Saturday.  Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) scored 20 points as Smith outscored the Engineers by 17 after halftime.

Mount Holyoke Overview: The Lyons are coming off a pair of games that are polar opposites - a 30 point loss to Wellesley, preceded by an 86-82 double-overtime win over Springfield College.  The Lyons had three players score more than 20 points against Springfield, combining for 88% of Mount Holyoke's scoring.

Smith Player to Watch: Quattrocchi has averaged 3.25 steals per game, with 52 so far this year.  Her career total through 16 games this year is 192, and could break the career steals record, currently at 239.

Mount Holyoke Player to Watch:  Pascual can light it up, having hit at least three three-pointers in a game five times this year, and is the league's fourth leading scorer at 13. 7 points per game.

Did you know?  Smith will honor Martha Clute '48, the first ever varsity coach at Smith, with a moment of silence before tonight's game.  Clute coached for six seasons at Smith, and led the Pioneers to their first ever win against Mount Holyoke.
