January 26, 2013

Box Score NORTON, Mass.--Four of Smith College's starting lineup scored in double-digits as the Pioneers completed a season sweep of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Wheaton College on Saturday afternoon, by a 74-60 count.  Smith is now 16-2 overall, and 11-1 in the NEWMAC, while Wheaton boasts a 7-12 overall record, and a 4-8 mark against NEWMAC opposition.

Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) led all scorers with 20 points, connecting on eight of 17 shot attempts, and knocking down a trio of three point shots.  She also pulled down nine rebounds and added three steals.  Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) chipped in 13 points while handing out six assists and collecting four swipes.  Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) and Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate) each had 12 points, with Solis handing out seven assists and posting eight steals.

Smith opened the game on a 10-2 run, capped by Drummond's fast break layup at the 16:21 mark, but Kiley Shoemaker's layup off a feed from Lauren McClelland cut the deficit to 15-11 with 8:43 remaining.  The Lyons continued to chip away, tying the game at 22 on a three from Laura Pierce, but Smith took a 26-24 lead into halftime thanks to Solis' jumper with 16 ticks left in the first half.

The Lyons took their first lead of the game on a triple by Rebecca Arnone 65 seconds into the second half, and held a 39-38 advantage as Drummond traded three pointers with Pierce and Kenzie Kuhn.  Drummond hit another three that gave Smith the lead for good on the next possesion, kickstarting a 14-2 run that gave Smith command of the game.  Drummond's third three of the contest, followed by a three from Solis and two layups from Quattrocchi, and Smith never looked back, going up by as many as 19 points when Quattrocchi nailed a three with 4:35 remaining.

Smith, which had shot 35% and was 0-for-8 from three in the opening frame, knocked down 20 of 37 second half attempts (54.5%) and drained six of 11 three pointers.  The Pioneers forced 31 Wheaton turnovers and limited the Lyons to 21-for-60 shooting for the contest.

Shoemaker had 14 points and seven rebounds for Wheaton, while Abbie Brickley had 13 points and seven boards.

Next up for Smith is a test against No. 22 Williams College on Monday evening at 7 p.m.  Wheaton will host conference opponent WPI on January 30 at 7 p.m.
