Smith Upsets No. 20 Williams College

January 28, 2013

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) hit a go-ahead three pointer with 47 seconds remaining as the Smith College basketball team posted a 53-49 upset of No. 20 Williams College on Monday night.  It was the first time Smith had beaten Williams in 25 years.

The Pioneers, who are now 17-2, opened up a big first half lead, then weathered the storm in the second half.  Williams has lost two of three and is 16-4 overall.

Drummond finished with a game high 21 points, while pulling down seven rebounds.  Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) netted 13 points, with four assists and six boards.  Amanda Zakoske (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) scored six points while hauling down nine rebounds and four thefts.

After the Ephs had taken a 49-48 lead on two free throws by Danny Rainer, Drummond curled off a screen and dropped her third triple of the game through the net to give Smith the lead for good.  Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) and Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) each went 1-for-2 from the free throw line to salt away the win.

The Ephs scored the first four points of the game, but Smith responded with a 13-4 run fueled by a pair of baskets from Quattrocchi and a fastbreak steal and layup by Solis.  Baecher's layup with12:50 left in the first half got Williams within 18-10, but Marissa Munoz-Ruiz (Fairfield, Calif./Justin-Siena) knocked down a short jumper and Drummond connected on two free throws to boost the advantage to 15 points (25-10).

After Drummond knocked down another three with 1:21 left in the first half, Rainer's layup cut the lead to 32-21 at the halftime break.

Williams chipped away at the beginning of the second half, using a three pointer from Jennie Harding and a layup by Baecher to get within two points at 34-32, and though Amanda Zakoske (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School)'s personal 6-0 run put Smith up 40-34, Williams clawed back within 40-39 on Ellen Cook's basket with 7:43 to go.

Cook drained another three to tie the game at 46, and Willams took their first lead since the opening minutes on a free throw by Baecher, setting the stage for Drummond's heroics.

Baecher led Williams with 14 points and eight rebounds, while Cook added 12 and Rainer had 10 for the Ephs.   Williams struggled from long distance, finishing 3-for-19 from three point range, including 0-for-10 in the first half.

The Pioneers will resume NEWMAC play with a home date against Springfield College on Wednesday, January 30, at 7 p.m.  Williams will travel to Colby College for a NESCAC contest on February 1, with tip-off scheduled for 8 p.m.
