NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--
Kelli Cheung (Plainfield, N.J./Union County Acad.) and
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) both won in third set tiebreakers as the Smith College tennis team fell to nearby foe Springfield College 7-2 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tennis match on Tuesday afternoon.
Smith is now 0-5, and 0-5 against NEWMAC opposition, while Springfield is 5-3, and 3-3 against NEWMAC foes.
Cheung, playing at No. 1 singles, scored a 2-6, 6-1, 10-6 comeback win over Sydney Streimer, while
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) also came back from a set back, winning 3-6, 6-3, 10-4 at No. 4 over Ariana Shemms.
At the No. 2 singles position,
Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria/King's Academy) was beaten by Rachel London 6-3, 6-0, while the Pride's Melanie Thulin beat
Ruth Yi (Federal Way, Wash./Beamer) 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3. Â Springfield also got a 6-1, 6-0 win from Stephanie Foster over
Andrea Tanco (Veracruz, Mexico/Li Po Chun (Hong Kong)) at No. 5, and a 6-4, 6-2 win by Alanna Grady over
Kathryn Dernbach (Naples, Fla./Community School) at No. 6.
In doubles action, Cheung teamed with
Tessy Lopez (Pomona, Calif./Ganesha), falling 8-4 to London and Foster at the No. 1 spot. Â Thulin and Shemms beat Samawi and
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) 8-2 at No. 2. Â Yi and Tanco were defeated by Streimer and Grady 8-3 at No. 3.Â
Smith will host Emerson College in the Pioneers' final home match of the fall season on Saturday at 1 p.m. Â
The Pride will host Suffolk University on Thursday at 4 p.m.
