Box Score DEDHAM, Mass.—Senior
Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) scored for the second straight game, but host Babson College came away with a 5-1 victory over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey play
on Saturday afternoon at Dedham Field.
Babson, which has won six of its last seven matches, is 8-5 on the season and 4-1 in conference play, while Smith drops to 9-3 overall and 2-3 in the NEWMAC.
Morgan Lockwood and Elizabeth Holmes each scored twice, junior Soozin Kang notched her second goal of the year for the Beavers, who also got assists from senior Julia Pochini and junior Caroline Malone.
Lockwood opened the scoring with her 10
th goal of the season at the
13:59 mark, beating Smith senior goalkeeper
Abbey Petronzio (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) with a hard shot from just inside the circle for a 1-0 edge. The Beavers doubled their lead seven and a half minutes later when Kang buried a blast off a penalty corner into the back of the cage at
21:31.
Smith promptly cut the lead in half as DeJesus notched her seventh goal of the year just 23 seconds later off a pass from
Marissa Vara (Hudson, Mass./Hudson), but Babson regained momentum with a pair of scores before the break. Holmes registered her first tally of the day, knocking home a rebound at the 29:15 mark, and Lockwood followed with her second goal of the half, converting on a breakaway following a turnover deep in the Pioneers' defensive third at 32:52 to give the Green and White a 4-1 halftime lead.
Holmes scored the only goal of the second half just
5:36 into the period, pouncing on a loose ball in front of the cage following a scramble to notch her first career multi-goal game.
Senior goalkeeper Kayla Florence made four saves on the day for Babson while Petronzio and sophomore
Maddi Wyda (Baltimore, Md./The Park School) each made five stops for the Pioneers.
Babson will return to action
on Sunday when they travel to Bates for a
1 p.m. start while Smith will be at Westfield State
on Tuesday night at
7 p.m.
