CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--Host MIT won every match in straight sets in a 9-0 win over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's tennis play on Saturday. Smith ends the fall team season with a 1-7 overall record, and a 1-7 mark in the NEWMAC. MIT clinched their fifth NEWMAC regular season title.
The Engineers' Elysa Kohrs beat Smith's
Kelli Cheung (Plainfield, N.J./Union County Acad.) 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, and got the same result from Wendi Kong over
Ruth Yi (Federal Way, Wash./Beamer) at No. 3, Sunnie Lampl over
Andrea Tanco (Veracruz, Mexico/Li Po Chun (Hong Kong)) at No. 5, and Alana Peters over
Kathryn Dernbach (Naples, Fla./Community School) at No. 6.
Krystal Lai beat
Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria/King's Academy) 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2, and Julia Hsu topped
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4.
MIT also won all three doubles matches, with Kohrs and Victoria Tam beating Cheung and
Tessy Lopez (Pomona, Calif./Ganesha) 8-1 at No. 1, and Lai and Michelle Dutt beat Samawi and
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) 8-2 at No. 2. Hsu and Lampl finished off doubles play with a 8-0 win over Tanco and Yi at No. 3.
Some members of the Smith tennis team will take part in the New England Women's Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament from October 19-21. MIT will do the same, then gear up for the NEWMAC tournament, where they will play the winner of Mount Holyoke and Babson.
