Field Hockey Tripped Up By Springfield

October 26, 2013

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass.--Host Springfield College scored five goals in a 23 minute span to break up a close game in a 10-3 win over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action on Saturday.  Smith falls to 10-6, and 2-5 in the NEWMAC, while Springfield improves to 5-10, and 3-4 against NEWMAC opposition.

The visitors made a bright start to the game, as Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset) set up Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) for her 26th goal of the season just 90 seconds into the match.

The Pride responded with a pair of goals less than two minutes apart.  Olivia Cabral assisted MK Murray on the tying goal, and Murray scored again at the 13 minute mark to put Springfield in front.  Springfield would add another goal, this time from Linnea Quist, but Smith made it a one goal game when Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) set up Stein for her second of the day to cut the lead to 3-2.

Springfield added two more before halftime; Murray's pass allowed Libby Hart to score, and Victoria Stollmer gave the Pride a 5-2 halftime lead.

Smith pulled within two goals when DeJesus notched her second assist of the game, setting up Elsie Odhiambo (Oyugis, Kenya/Kisumu Girls School) early in the second half.  The two assists give DeJesus 62 career points, tying her with Elizabeth Ryan '84 for 10th on Smith's all-time scoring list.

Springfield put the game out of reach with five goals over the rest of the half.  Cabral doubled the advantage in the 48th minute, while Quist, Sarah Ducharme, Taylor Friedman, and Murray also scored.

The Pride held a 28-6 lead in shots, and an 18-1 advantage in penalty corners.  Maddi Wyda (Baltimore, Md./The Park School) made career high 11 saves in the Smith cage, while the Pride's Juliana Barrasso made two stops.

Both teams will venture away from conference action for their next game. Smith heads to Keene State College on October 29.  The Pride host Salem State on October 30.
