Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--Roger Williams University connected on 27 of 33 shots from the free throw line on their way to a 66-59 win over host Smith College in the 2013-14 season opener for both teams.
It's the first time Smith has lost in a season opener since the 2007-08, and the first time Roger Williams had defeated Smith.
Jazmine Collins (Springfield, Mass./Sabis) marked her collegiate debut with 19 points on 7-for-8 eight shooting from the field to go along with seven board for Smith, while
Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) added 14 points and
Lauren Weston (Florence, Mass./Northampton) added 10. Â RWU's Angelica Ariola led all players with 20 points, connecting on 12 of 12 from the free throw line. Â Kaitlyn Bovee recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards.
Smith opened the game hot, thanks to
Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate)'s fast break layup and Weston's stickback of a Solis miss for an early 7-2 advantage. Â A free throw from Bovee got Roger Williams within four, but Solis converted a conventional three point play, then fed Collins for a layup that upped Smith's lead to 12-5. Â
The Hawks chipped away, using two more free throws from Bovee to get within 12-11, and opened up a 19-13 lead on a layup by Bridget Quilty with 6:47 left in the first half. Â Roger Williams took their biggest lead of the half on two foul shots by Shannon Cullen, but Smith clawed back within two by the end of the first half. Â Back-to-back baskets by Solis and Weston got the lead down to 30-26, and
Jade Chihara (Laihana, Hawaii/Laihanaluna) sent Smith into the half down 35-30 with a free throw with four seconds remaining.
Roger Williams got the lead back up to eight on a triple by Ari Renwick with five minutes played in the second half, and after both teams traded misses, Collins knocked down her only three of the game to get Smith within 49-45 with 10:57 to play. Â When Bovee drained a three with 6:19 to play, Roger Williams had their largest lead of the game at 59-49, but Smith held them scoreless over the next three minutes, using a pair of buckets by Collins to trim the deficit to 58-56. After two free throws by Ariola, Parkmond's layup at the 2:28 mark got Smith within 60-58, but Smith could not get closer, being outscored 6-1 in the final 1:45.
Smith held a 44-42 advantage in rebounding, including 21-11 on the offensive glass. Â Smith heads straight into conference play by hosting Clark University on November 20 at 7 p.m. Â Roger Williams will play their home opener on November 19, when Brandeis University comes to town at 7 p.m.
