Box Score SOUTH HADLEY, Mass.--The Smith College basketball team limited Mount Holyoke College to 27.8% shooting on their way to a 71-38 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win over the Lyons on Wednesday evening.
Smith ends a two game losing skid and improves to 2-3 overall, and 2-2 within the NEWMAC, while Mount Holyoke drops their third straight contest and is now 3-3, and 1-2 against NEWMAC opposition.
Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) led all-scorers with 15 points, while adding seven steals and four assists. Â
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) had 14 points and nine rebounds, and
Mandy Castro (San Diego, Calif./Poway), making her first collegiate start, had 10 points, five assists, and four steals as the Pioneers forced 30 turnovers off Mount Holyoke.
Smith pulled ahead early, going on a 12-2 run over a six minute span in the first half to take a 14-4 lead. Â Solis fed
Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate) for a go-ahead layup, and after Jocelyn Portmann's layup got Mount Holyoke within 5-4, back-to-back layups by Solis and Castro put Smith in front for good. Â Â
Solis' theft of Amber Legare was followed by a layup by
Marissa Munoz-Ruiz (Fairfield, Calif./Justin-Siena) that gave Smith a 21-8 lead with 7:30 to play in the first half, a margin that was maintained at halftime on
Lauren Weston (Florence, Mass./Northampton)'s free throw with 28 seconds remaining. Â
Leading 28-15 at the break, Smith stretched the lead to 36-17 on Parkmond's putback of a Solis miss, and Smith took their biggest lead of the game on Castro's fast break layup with 3:26 to play. Â Smith shot 48.7% (19-39) in the second half, and were dominant on the boards throughout the game, outrebounding Mount Holyoke 54-39, with a 24-11 edge in offensive rebounds. Â
Genelle Green was the only Mount Holyoke player to reach double-digits, scoring 13 points. Â
Smith stays on the road, traveling to Wellesley College on Saturday, December 7. Â Mount Holyoke will also be on the road, play at MIT on December 7.
