NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College basketball team can get back to .500 when the Pioneers (2-3, 2-2 NEWMAC) head to Wellesley College (4-2, 2-1 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon. The game has been moved to a 3 p.m. start.
Last Meeting: Third seeded Wellesley upset No. 2 seed Smith in the semifinals of the NEWMAC tournament, 71-63.
The Series: Smith leads, 34-26, and the Pioneers have won 10 of the last 12 meetings, dating back to 2007.
Fast Facts: The Blue have won four of five...the lone loss in that stretch was a one point setback to Coast Guard...this is only the second home game of the season for the Blue...Wellesley has the stingiest defense in the league, allowing 51.2 points per game...senior Leslie Leong leads the team with 13.2 points per game...Smith thumped Mount Holyoke 71-38 on Wednesday night...
Mandy Castro (San Diego, Calif./Poway) made her first career start and had 10 points, five assists, and four steals without committing a turnover...Smith leads the league in forced turnovers at 26.4 points per game, as well as a league high 13 steals per game.
Next Up: Smith closes out the fall semester by hosting Westfield State in a non-conference matchup on December 10. Wellesley will be off until December 30, when the Blue travel to Wesleyan (CT).
