NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College basketball team can lock up the No. 2 seed in the upcoming New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament with a win over Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday night. The Pioneers (20-3, 14-2 NEWMAC) have won the last five meetings with the Engineers (13-9, 9-7 NEWMAC), including two meetings in the NEWMAC tournament semi-finals.
Last Meeting: Smith rolled past WPI, 63-39 on January 16. Smith limited WPI to four field goals in the first half, while shooting 47.2% for the game.
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) led Smith with 17 points, followed by
Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) with 15 and
Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate) with 12.
Smith Overview: The Pioneers had an eight game winning streak snapped with a 73-52 loss to No. 22 Babson College on Sunday. The game was delayed 24 hours by Winter Storm Nemo, but Smith struggled in the second half, connecting on a mere 7-for-33 field goal attempts.
WPI Overview: The Engineers suffered a tough 52-51 overtime loss to Wellesley on Sunday. WPI led by 10 at halftime, but Wellesley knocked down their only three pointer of the game to force a late tie and send the game to the extra frame.
Smith Player to Watch: Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) has scored 17 points in each of her last two contests, and has scored in double-figures in six of her last seven games.
WPI Player to Watch: Forward Dani Davis is averaging 10.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, and more than a block and steal per contest.
