Drummond's Double-Double Leads Smith to No. 2 Seed

February 13, 2013

Box Score WORCESTER, Mass.--Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) led four Smith players in double-figures as the Pioneers knocked off Worcester Polytechnic Institute 76-55 on Wednesday night.  The win guarantees the Pioneers the No. 2 seed in the upcoming NEWMAC tournament, and a bye into the semi-finals.

With the win, Smith, ranked seventh in the latest NCAA Division III New England rankings  improves to 21-3 overall and 15-2 in conference and has secured the number two seed in next week's NEWMAC Tournament.  WPI drops to 13-10 on the year and 9-8 in NEWMAC action.

Despite shooting 50% (6-12) from three-point range and 87.5% (7-8) from the free-throw line, WPI was unable to overcome Smith's suffocating defense.  The Pioneers forced 29 WPI turnovers and converted them into 28 points.  Smith nabbed 19 steals on the night and shot 42.3% (33-78) from the field.

WPI kept the game tight throughout the first half playing within a six point window, while the lead changed hands nine times.  Kelly Morgan scored the first bucket of the game and led the Engineers with seven first-half points.  With 3:23 to go in the first stanza, a Drummond jumper sparked a 14-0 run that put Smith up 40-25 heading into the break, a gap the Crimson and Gray were unable to recover from.

In addition to Drummond's 16 and 10, Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) netted 13 points.  Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate) had 12 points, and Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) had 11.  Marissa Munoz-Ruiz (Fairfield, Calif./Justin-Siena) passed out a career high eight assists, as Smith had helpers on 20 of 33 baskets.  Smith also outrebounded WPI 45-36, including a 21-11 advantage on the offensive glass.

Morgan led the WPI charge with a game-high 17 points and was the only Engineer in double digits.  In the senior's last home game, Cindy Chelius added eight points including 4-of-4 from the charity stripe.  Dani Davis scored five points and pulled down four rebounds.  Rachel Pineda and Yasmeen Luna combined for eight points.  Sienna Mamayek hauled in a team-high five boards for the Engineers.

Smith will match up with Wellesley on Saturday, February 16th while WPI returns to action the same day when they face off against NEWMAC foe Coast Guard at 2 pm in Connecticut.  A win over the Bears would secure a home game for Engineers in next week's NEWMAC Tournament.
