NEW HAVEN, Conn.--The Smith College squash team got the Howe Cup underway with an 8-1 defeat to Haverford College on Friday. The Howe Cup is taking place at Yale University.
Jacqueline Zhou (Singapore, Singapore/) notched the lone win of the evening for the Pioneers, with an 11-6, 11-7 ,11-9 victory over Caroline Nightengale at No. 1. Smith also suffered two tough five game defeats, with
Vivian Lee (Seoul, South Korea/Yongsan International School of Seoul) pushing Alex Love to the limit at No. 3, falling 5-11, 11-6, 8-11, 11-9, 2-11, and Dipshika Mahajan also went five at No. 8, in a 4-11, 12-10, 11-6, 10-12, 8-11 loss to Hannah Miller.
Szilvi Kiss also went beyond three sets, falling 7-11, 11-9, 5-11, 5-11 to Alisa Strayer at No. 4.
Smith will resume play in the three team round robin with a match up against New York University at 9 a.m.
