SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Mount Holyoke College squash team captured its seventh consecutive Seven Sisters Championship today at the MHC Squash Courts. After battling to 9-0 and 5-4 victories against Smith College and Wellesley College, the Lyons shutout Vassar College to secure the crown. MHC entered the weekend ranked 20th in the most recent CSA National Rankings.
After being swept by the host Lyons 9-0 in the opener, Smith fell to Vassar 6-3 in the second match of the day.
Jacqueline Zhou (Singapore, Singapore/) earned a 3-0 (11-9, 11-3, 11-4) win over Libby Pei at No. 1, while at No. 3, Szilvi Kiss went to extra points in every game in a 13-11, 12-10, 12-10 win.
Eunice Zhao (Las Vegas, Nev./Liberty) also earned a win at No. 2, with a four game 11-5, 8-11, 11-9, 11-5 win over Alexandra Bowditch.
Zhou also notched the lone Smith win against Wellesley, with an 11-8, 8-11, 12-10, 11-9 victory at the No. 1 spot over Rosemary O'Connor.
Mount Holyoke was followed in the final standings by 26th-ranked Wellesley (2-1), 33rd-ranked Vassar (1-2) and 36th-ranked Smith (0-3). Juniors Randima Ranaweera and Shaheen Madraswala, along with senior Kathryn Brummer represented the Lyons on the All-Tournament Team. Joining the trio was Rosemary O'Connor and Gabriella Wynne from Wellesley, Nancy Zhang and Alex Bowditch from Vassar and
Jacqueline Zhou (Singapore, Singapore/) from Smith.
There were a number of strong performances throughout the day as several achieved a perfect 3-0 record on the day. Mount Holyoke saw four players record a perfect mark, including Ranaweera, first year Sherouk Khefagy, Madraswala and Brummer. For Wellesley, Alexandra Spiliakos and Haley Vasquez both went undefeated on the day.
Smith will return to the courts on February 15, at the Howe Cup at Yale University.
