NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College tennis team entertained Simmons College and Endicott College on Saturday. In the first match, Smith fell to Simmons 9-0, and to Endicott 8-1 in the second. Smith is now 2-11 on the season.
Simmons
The Sharks (13-2) swept all nine matches, winning three singles matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores.
Jordan Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) fell to Margaret Teague 0-6, 0-6 at No. 1, while at No. 2,
Kyle Gouchoe-Hanas (Durham, N.C./Carolina Friends) lost to Sabria Salmela 1-6, 2-6.
Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria/King's Academy) fell to Meghan Cokely 2-6, 0-6 at No. 3, and
Tessy Lopez (Pomona, Calif./Ganesha) was swept by Rachael Downey 0-6, 0-6 at No. 4. Rachel Sweeny defeated Smith's
Carly Melillo (Chester, Conn./Valley) 1-6, 0-6 at No. 5, and Katie Crowley beat
Jinan Martiuk (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview) 0-6, 0-6 at No. 6.
Simmons took all three doubles matches. Teague and Cokely beat Dubin and Gouchoe-Hanas 2-8 at No. 1, and Sweeny and Caroline Khoury won 3-8 over Victoria von Saucken and
Carly Melillo (Chester, Conn./Valley). Casey Gilman and Maddie Theoharidis squeaked past Samawi and Lopez 9-7 at No. 3.
Endicott
Smith shuffled the lineup against Endicott, and at No. 1, Dubin beat Chrissy Martel 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot. Samawi moved up to No. 2, falling to Natalie Egbert 1-6, 0-6, and Lopez fell to Gina Pinciaro 1-6, 3-6.
At No. 4., Melillo lost to Rachel Fenstermaker 1-6, 1-6, while at No. 5, von Saucken was beaten by Savannah Deady 1-6, 3-6. Katheryn Dernbach made her collegiate debut, falling to Sarah Hill at No. 6, 0-6, 0-6.
In doubles play, Smith came closest to a win at No. 2, where Melillo and von Saucken lost in a tiebreaker to Deady and Brittany Potter 8-9 (5-7). Dubin and Gouchoe-Hanas lost to Pinciaro and Emilie Cloutier 4-8 at the No. 1 position.
Emi Lee (Portland, Ore./Cleveland), also playing in her first collegiate match, was teamed with Samawi for an 2-8 loss at the No. 3 spot fo Fenstermaker and Suzie Newman.
Smith will be at home against Lesley University on April 3 at 4:30 p.m.
