Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College field hockey team set a new school record for goals in a game in a 14-0 win over Daniel Webster College on Thursday afternoon. Smith is now 4-0, the longest winning streak since the 1994 season.
Allie Stein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer),
Alexa DeJesus (Somerset, Mass./Somerset), and
Rebecca Meagher (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) each scored three goals to lead the way for the Pioneers, whose previous record for goals in a game came in a 12-1 win over Bay Path College on September 10, 2011. The NCAA record for goals in a game is 19, set twice by Eastern Mennonite University in 1992 and 1996.
Kristen Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) got the ball rolling with a goal four minutes into the game, and DeJesus made it 2-0 with a goal from
Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth)' pass in the 11th minute. Two goals from Stein, at the 19:12 and 23:06 mark, made it 4-0, and Smith would add four more before the half ended.
Stein set up DeJesus for her second of the game in the 28th minute, and
Casey Rau (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) got her first career goal two minutes later. Stein and DeJesus both completed their hat-tricks before the end of the half, as Smith went into halftime with an 8-0 lead.
Smith picked up where they left off in the second half, with
Elsie Odhiambo (Oyugis, Kenya/Kisumu Girls School) getting a goal less than 90 seconds into the second stanza.
Kristen Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) got her second of the game with an assist from
Marissa Vara (Hudson, Mass./Hudson). Meagher had a hand in the next four Smith goals, setting up
Petru Bester (Deep River, Conn./Valley Regional) for one and scoring the final three of the contest.
Abbey Petronzio (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) played the first half in goal, and did not make a save.
Maddi Wyda (Baltimore, Md./The Park School) and
Nora Demick (Watertown, Mass/Beaver Country Day) split time in goal in the second half, and were not tested. Teresa Moscati made seven saves in net for the Eagles.
Smith held a 21-0 edge in shots on goal, and a 15-0 advantage in penalty corners.
Smith will travel to Elms College for a 5 pm start on Tuesday, September 17. Daniel Webster will travel to Framingham State on September 16.
