Box Score 2 NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College volleyball team saw their season opening winning streak come to an end, but earned a split in a quad match that featured Western New England University, Lasell College, and Castleton State College on Saturday afternoon.
Smith (6-1) lost to Western New England (10-0) 3-1 (16-25, 19-25, 25-20, 17-25) in the first match of the day, before toppling Lasell 3-1 (25-16, 25-20, 22-25, 25-17). The days other action saw Lasell (4-4) and Western New England both beat Castleton State (2-4).
Paige Sarlandt (Cloverdale, Calif./Cloverdale) had seven kills and hit .667 with five solo blocks and seven block assists to lead the way for Smith against Western New England, who also got seven kills apiece from
Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) and
Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, Calif./Cypress).
Julie Voorhes (Ramona, Calif./Ramona) has 25 digs and
Bethany Ashworth (North Falmouth, Mass./Bourne) had 22 assists and 15 digs.
Against Lasell, Smith opened up by winning the first two sets before the Lasers captured the third. The Pioneers took a 16-9 lead in the fourth set en route to a 25-17 win. Drummond topped the Smith scoresheet with 12 kills, three solo blocks, and a pair of service aces. Sarlandt had 11 kills and
Mei-Li Smith (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) had 10 more, with seven assists and three service aces. Ashworth had 24 assists, while Voorhes had 23 digs.
Smith opens up NEWMAC play with a visit from Clark University on Tuesday, September 17, at 7 p.m. Western New England will travel to Tufts University on September 18, while Lasell hosts Regis on Monday evening.
