Game Preview: Basketball vs. Coast Guard

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College basketball team finishes up a busy week when the Pioneers (4-7, 4-4 NEWMAC) travel to the United States Coast Guard Academy (10-1, 6-1 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon.    Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.


Last Meeting: Smith was down one at halftime, but opened the second half on a 21-3 run in a 71-50 win on February 2, 2013.  Amanda Zakoske (Jacksonville, Fla./The Bolles School) led Smith with 14 points, while Devon Quattrocchi (Brewster, N.Y./Brewster) and Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate) chipped in 11 apiece.  The Pioneers forced 23 Coast Guard turnovers.

The Series:  The series is tied, 18-18.  Smith has won the last eight meetings over the Bears, and is 9-10 when playing at Coast Guard.

Fast Facts: Coast Guard is off to the best start in school history with their 10-1 record...the Bears' only loss is to league leader Wheaton back on Jan. 4...In conference games, the Bears have the third best scoring offense (67.3 ppg), but the sixth best scoring defense (56.7 ppg allowed)...Torie Sutherland leads the Bears at 14.2 points per game...Sutherland is also third in the league in three point shooting percentage (40.5%)...Smith pulled away for an 82-64 win over Springfield on Thursday night...Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) is averaging 20.2 points and 10.2 rebounds over her last five games...Drummond leads the league at 17.5 points per game...Smith leads the league with 10.9 steals per game and 21.9 forced turnovers.

Next Up:  Smith goes back to Connecticut on Jan. 14 for a non-conference game against Trinity College.  Coast Guard hosts WPI on Jan. 15 at 7 p.m.
