NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Captain
Vivian Lee (Seoul, South Korea/Yongsan International School of Seoul) earned the first team point of the season with a 3-0 (11-6, 11-6, 11-0) victory in the final match of the day against Colgate's No. 1 as the Smith College squash team hosted the Smith College Invitational on Saturday. The Pioneers fell 7-2 to Colgate after absorbing a 9-0 setback to William Smith and Wellesley in earlier action.
Lee capitalized on her technique and putaway shots while the other team point came via a forfeit at the bottom of the lineup. The match also saw
Carly Melillo (Chester, Conn./Valley) edged 9-11 at No. 2 in the deciding game after rebounding from an 6-11 first game to take the next two 12-10 and 11-4. Her opponent came back with an 2-11 game to force the fifth.
Gracie Maull (Exeter, N.H./Miss Porters (CT)) went to four games at No. 6 as she recorded an 11-8 victory in the second before ultimately falling 3-1 (7-11, 11-8, 4-11, 7-11). Eva Morganstein was competitive at No. 5 despite a 7-11, 7-11, 9-11 decision and
Leah Jeon (Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada/Collingwood) was close to forcing a fourth game at No. 8 (6-11, 2-11, 11-13).
In the first two matches of the day, Smith faced a pair experienced teams and put forth an excellent effort. Lee was competitive against William Smith and Wellesley's No.1 while Maull and
Jessica Ryan (Northampton, Mass./) each had a strong start against the Herons.
Squash competes next at the Seven Sisters Squash Championship hosted by Smith next weekend.
