Game Preview: Basketball vs. Springfield

January 09, 2014

NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College basketball team will look to string together consecutive wins for the first time this year when the Pioneers (3-7, 3-4 NEWMAC) host Springfield College (8-4, 4-3 NEWMAC) on Thursday evening.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Last Meeting:  Smith rained down threes on the Pride on their way to a 79-44 win on January 30, 2013.  Alyssa Barrett (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) and Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) each scored 22 points.  Solis was 3-of-5 from behind the arc, while Barrett connected on six of 10 shots from downtown.

The Series: Springfield leads 26-9, but Smith has won six of the last seven meetings between the schools that founded men's basketball and women's basketball.

Fast Facts: Springfield had a seven game win streak ended with a 67-57 defeat to Wellesley on Tuesday night...Jaimie Bickelhaupt is averaging 13.8 points, 8.8 rebounds, and a block per game...the Pride have already doubled their win total from last year's 4-20 season...a win tonight would be the 400th for head coach Naomi Graves...Smith ended a four game losing skid with a 58-53 win over MIT...Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) had her second double-double in three games...in her last two games, Drummond is 17-for-30 from the field...Sydney Parkmond (Waterbury, Conn./Chase Collegiate) is averaging nearly four offensive rebounds per game - if that continues throughout the season, it would be the highest single season average in school history.

Next Up:  Smith travels to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy for a 1 p.m. start on Saturday, while Springfield is off until January 15, when the Pride will host Mount Holyoke at 7 p.m.
