Jenny Estes delivers game-winner to give Smith 1st win over Babson since 2006

Pioneers score 3-2 overtime win over Beavers

October 11, 2014

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Senior Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) netted the game-winner some two minutes and 17 seconds into overtime Saturday to lift the Smith College field hockey team to a 3-2 win over New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Babson College. The win marks the first win for Smith over Babson since 2006.

With the win, the Pioneers improve to 3-9, and 1-4 in NEWMAC play, while Babson slips to 8-6 and 3-2.

The Beavers scored the game's first goal in the 17th minute, when sophomore Megan Jones (Essex, Mass./Manchester) tipped in senior Caroline Malone (Walpole, Mass./Walpole)'s pass for her fourth marker of the season.

Five minutes later, Babson pushed their advantage to two as Malone redirected a shot from in front of the cage for her eighth score of the year.

With 12 seconds remaining in the first half, the Pioneers were awarded a penalty corner. As time expired junior Casey Rau (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) corralled a pass from classmate Marissa Vara (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) and pushed it past the Beavers' goalie to cut Smith's deficit in half, 2-1.

The Beavers consistently applied pressure on the offensive end in the second half, outshooting the Pioneers 13-3. Smith goalkeeper Nora Demick (Watertown, Mass/Beaver Country Day) did a good job of stonewalling Babson whenever they knocked on the door, finishing with 10 saves.

With under seven minutes to play in regulation, sophomore Elsie Odhiambo (Oyugis, Kenya/Kisumu Girls School) picked off junior Kayla Costa (Watertown, Mass./Watertown)'s pass and fired the ball past her to tie the contest, 2-2. The goal was the first of the season for Odhiambo.

The Beavers were awarded a penalty corner at the 68:23 mark, and junior Melanie Jordan (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) looked as though she had found a seam in the Pioneers defense. However, Demick made a fantastic blocker save at the last second to send the ball out of harms way.

In extra time, Smith converted on another penalty corner, this time with first year Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) finding Estes just inside the circle, who fired it past the Beavers' outstretched keeper to snap Babson's seven game-winning streak over the Pioneers.

Demick has now won back-to-back starts in net for Smith. Costa, the reigning NEWMAC Defensive Player of the Week, made three saves in between the pipes for the Beavers.

The Pioneers will host Westfield State at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, while the Beavers host Bates College at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
