BOSTON, Mass. – The Smith College tennis team defeated the Emerson College Lions Saturday 8-1 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play to post their first win of the 2014-15 season.
The Pioneers, who were missing four starters due to various reasons, won thanks to a complete team effort.
First-year
Poomi Arunachalam () won her first collegiate match at number five singles, defeating Marilia Rosario of Emerson, 6-1, 6-1 while sophomore
Christine Yee (South San Francisco, Calif./South San Francisco) and senior
Seema Samawi (Damascus, Syria/King's Academy) notched their first wins in singles competition this season. Yee defeated Nora Gonzalez, 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4 singles, and Samawi knocked off Sarah Brennan-Athas at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1.
Sophomore
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) won a pair of matches Saturday, blanking Theresa Nelson at No.3 singles, 6-0, 6-0, for her team-best fifth win of the season, and later teamed up with first-year
Katherine Hazen () to defeat Brennan-Athas and Rosario at No. 2 doubles, 8-1.
First-year
Jimin Amanda Lee () paired up with sophomore
Kelli Cheung (Plainfield, N.J./Union County Acad.) at No. 1 doubles to tally her first doubles win of the season, defeating Winfield and Nelson, 8-6.
The Pioneers (1-5, 1-5 NEWMAC) will return to NEWMAC action Tuesday when they host Clark University at 4 p.m.
