NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College Tennis team is hosting a Rally for the Cure® Match on Saturday, October 11.
Rally for the Cure is a grass roots program that works to educate women about breast cancer and remind them to get their annual screening through volunteer organized golf, tennis and social events. More than 2 million people have participated in Rally events across the nation since its inception in 1996. This year marks the first year the Pioneer tennis team has rallied against breast cancer.
The day's activities will include a hit-around with Smith tennis players at 10 a.m. and each participant will receive a goody bag with important breast health information and other Rally items plus a subscription to a select Condé Nast magazine such as SELF, Golf Digest and Bon Appétit.
The match itself starts at 1 p.m. against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The Engineers finished last season ranked No. 13 in NCAA Division III, and come into Saturday's match sporting an undefeated 6-0 record.
"We are proud to open our facility and host a Rally for the Cure event. The event is a fun way for us to bring together our members and the community to support an important cause while playing a sport they are passionate about," said head coach
Chris Davis.
Since its start in 1996, the Rally program has touched over 2 million people with the important message that early detection and effective treatment saves lives. In addition to mobilizing people behind breast cancer awareness, Rally events have generated over $75 million for Susan G. Komen.
"The success of Rally is attributed to volunteer ambassadors like Coach Davis, who have said 'Yes we can host a Rally event'. It is their enthusiasm, energy and support we value in our commitment to support Susan G. Komen," says Diane Perillo, Program Manager, Rally for the Cure.
Since 1996, Komen has received over $75 million from fundraising activities at Rally events to help fund life-saving breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs. Rally for the Cure® is run by Condé Nast and is based in Wilton, Connecticut. For further information about this event, contact
