Field Hockey sends off seniors with 5-1 win

November 01, 2014

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College Field Hockey team rewarded their three graduating seniors by defeating visiting Clark University, 5-1 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play Saturday. Senior Kristen Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) scored her first goal of the season, and 14th of her career, in her final home game.

First-year Amanda Lavond (Campbell, Calif./Westmont) opened the scoring for the Pioneers just 3:50 into the contest to give Smith a 1-0 lead. The Pioneers tacked on a second first-half goal when first-year Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy) tallied her fourth goal of the season at the 24:20 mark.

Clark answered at the beginning of the second half, as Olivia Cotton scored her fourth goal of the year inside the 36 minute mark to cut Smith's lead in half (2-1).

Hamilton again gave Smith a two-goal lead as she connected on a feed from senior Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) for her fifth goal of the season.

Junior Marissa Vara (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) added further insurance by scoring her team-best 12th goal of the season. First-year Caroline Labriola (Westbrook, Conn./Westbrook) was credited with the assist.

Estes scored her first goal of the season with just 23 seconds remaining in the contest, as she corralled a pass from sophomore Elsie Odhiambo (Oyugis, Kenya/Kisumu Girls School) and slapped it past the Cougars' keeper to push Smith's advantage to 5-1.

The contest marked the final game in the careers of seniors Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth), Kristen Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) and Rebecca Meagher (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough). All three have been integral parts of the Pioneers this season.

Smith finishes the 2014 season with a 5-13 record, and a 2-6 record in conference play. The Pioneers finish the season with the 14th-toughest schedule in all of NCAA DIII, including matches against four ranked opponents.
