MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Smith College squash team opened play at the 2014 Wesleyan Invitational today. The Pioneers lost to Middlebury College, 9-0, before falling to William Smith College, 9-0 in the nightcap.
The Pioneers were without their #1 senior,
Jacqueline Zhou (Singapore, Singapore/Raffles Institution), as she sustained an injury playing head coach
Tim Bacon at practice this past Thursday. Smith was forced to shuffle their lineup, as first-year
Julia Yun (Auburn, Wash./Thomas Jefferson) saw her first action of the year in the exhibition spot.
In the first match of the day against the Panthers of Middlebury College, Smith got a strong effort from Yun, who fell to Carter Makin, 3-11 4-11, 3-11, while at No. 1,
Jana Chan (San Francisco, Calif./The Bay School) was bested by Saskia Pownall-Gray, 4-11, 0-11, 3-11.
In the Pioneers match against William Smith, Chan battled with Jocelyn McKenzie, with McKenzie taking the match 11-5, 11-7, 11-4.
Smith closes out the 2014 Wesleyan Invitational with matches against Tufts (9 a.m.) and Mount Holyoke (10:30 a.m.). Â
