MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Smith College squash team concluded play at the Wesleyan Invitational with matches against Mount Holyoke College and Tufts University Sunday.
The Pioneers fell to Mount Holyoke, 9-0, before falling to Tufts, 8-1.
After Smith's #4, senior
Haruka Shimoto (Tokyo, Japan/International School of the Sacred Heart), irritated a chronic back injury in yesterday's play, joining Smith #1
Jacqueline Zhou (Singapore, Singapore/Raffles Institution) on the sidelines, two newcomers got a chance to step into the Smith line-up for the first time:
Julia Yun (Auburn, Wash./Thomas Jefferson) moved up to the #9 spot, and
Frankie Scully () competed in exhibition #10 spot. Scully joined the team on Tuesday, straight out of the ESS Beginning Squash Class.
MHC Coach Erin Robson generously sat two of her top players to keep the matches fairly competitive despite the 9-0 score.
Smith plays MHC on Sunday Dec. 3 at 6:30 pm at MHC. The team is hoping that with Zhou and Shimoto back into the line-up, and with the four novices (first few weeks of squash) with another two weeks of practice under their belts the team will have a shot at a couple of individual wins.
