Game Preview: Basketball vs. Wellesley

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Smith College basketball team (9-10, 9-5 NEWMAC) takes its conference three-game winning streak into a home contest against league-leading Wellesley (14-3, 11-2 NEWMAC) on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
 
Last Meeting: Wellesley earned a 68-53 home win on December 7th in the Pioneers last conference game before the break.
 
The Series: Smith enjoys a 34-27 advantage all-time. The Blue have won the last two, including a 50-37 upset of the Pioneers in the 2013 NEWMAC Women's Basketball Championship semifinals.
 
Fast Facts: Wellesley boasted an 8-1 mark in January with the lone loss coming to conference newcomer Emerson on the 25th…the Blue rebounded with a 55-45 victory at home against Babson this past Wednesday…entering the week, Wellesley has held opponents to an average of 49.7 points per game which is third in Division-III…Natalie Anderson has made 44.7 percent of her three-pointers in conference play to lead the NEWMAC…Rosa Drummond (Rye, N.H./Portsmouth) earned CapitalOne CoSIDA Division III Women's Basketball Academic All-District I honors and is now on the ballot for Academic All-America status…Drummond is one three-pointer shy of Diana Bull's program record of 137 career three-point field goals made…in the last four games, Marissa Munoz-Ruiz (Fairfield, Calif./Justin-Siena) is shooting 59.1 percent from the floor (13-of-22) and Drummond is 41.7 (10-of-24) percent from downtown...at the charity stripe, Paulina Solis (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) and Drummond are sinking over 83 percent of their chances.
 
Next Up: Both teams return to NEWMAC action at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday as Smith travels to WPI and Wellesley hits the road for MIT.
