Lacrosse Tamed by Emerson

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Smith College lacrosse team fell, 21-11, to visiting Emerson in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.
 
Jessica Lillquist (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) paced the Pioneers with four goals apiece while Olivia Timmins (Medford, Mass./Medford), Rachel Silveria (Dunstable, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) and Anne Zawacki (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) each scored once. Zawacki led the team with seven draw controls as Lillquist and Silveria each scooped up four. Merric Kallfelz (North Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) was credited with eight stops.
 
Emerson's Guerin Morissette scored a game-best six goals off the bench. Kanika Misra added five goals while Meredith Weber and Tayllar Righini each found the back of the net four times. Weber and Misra each doled out a pair of helpers as Weber also had a game-best nine draw controls. Victoria Kanaris halted 15 shots for the Lions.
 
The Lions took a 2-0 lead 4:18 into the contest of goals by Weber and Righini. Exactly a minute later, Lillquist put the Pioneers on the board. Emerson then used a pair of goals by Misra and one by Righini to take the 5-0 advantage. Zawacki interrupted the Lions outburst with a goal midway through the first half. The Lions reeled off three more to take an 8-2 lead with 11:38 left in the frame. Lillquist brought the Pioneers back within five at the 9:10 and 4:28 mark. Emerson then closed out the stanza with three more tallies.
 
Misra, who scored with 13 seconds remaining in the first half, opened the second with a marker at 28:09.Estes scored her first of the game at 27:05. Righini countered at 26:30 to deny Estes a natural hat-trick as the Pioneer junior rattled off the next two. The teams then traded goals until Righini, Weber and Morissette all scored in a span of 1:48 down the stretch.
 
Smith (1-8, 0-2 NEWMAC) concludes its three-game homestand with a 4:00 p.m. non-conference matchup with Westfield State. Emerson (6-3, 1-1 NEWMAC) will host Maine-Farmington at 6:00 p.m., also on Wednesday.
