Anne Zawacki (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) established new career highs of six goals and seven points as the Smith College lacrosse team held off Simmons for a 17-15 non-conference victory on Saturday.
Olivia Timmins (Medford, Mass./Medford),
Jessica Lillquist (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and
Rachel Silveria (Dunstable, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) all registered a hat-trick while
Petru Bester (Deep River, Conn./Valley Regional) added a pair of goals for the Pioneers as the team produced its highest goal output in a single game this season. Lillquist also pitched in with a game-high four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Silveria led all student-athletes with eight draw controls as
Jenny Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) corralled five.
Merric Kallfelz (North Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) stopped nine shots en route to the win.
Stephanie Olveri and Greer Gilbert each scored five times for the Sharks. Alexia Malone Olvier and Ashley Sheehan scored twice and Becca Shea found the back of the net once. Oliver, Allie McDavitt, Sheehan, Gilbert and Seneca Martensson all picked up a pair of ground balls while Sheehan paced the squad with a trio of draw controls. Crystal Derosier halted a game-high 13 shots in the setback.
Zawacki capped a 3-1 run to open the game with a tally at 22:53. Gilbert and Sheehan combined to score the next three as Simmons took the 4-3 advantage midway through the first half. Zawacki rattled off the next three while Timmins put the Pioneers up 7-4 with 7:47 left in the frame. Gilbert halted the spurt with a goal at 7:09. Lillquist and Bester scored 10 seconds apart for the 9-5 lead with 6:11 remaining. Oliver interrupted the Pioneers scoring with a tally at 5:26. Timmins and Zawacki each scored one more before Shea setup a Sheehan tally with 2:49 before the break.
Lillquist dented the scoreboard nearly six minutes into the second half as Silveria scored 17 seconds later. Oliveri and Shea each interrupted Silveria who ended up scoring three consecutive Pioneer goals. Oliveri tried her hand at three in-a-row but Zawacki interjected at 8:15. Oliver and Bester traded goals 17 seconds apart before Gilbert and Olviveri combined for the final three goals of the game.
Smith outshot the Sharks 39-28 and committed one less turnover (15-14). Ground balls were even at 14-all while the Pioneers held a 20-14 advantage in draw controls. Smith also doubled up Simmons in free position shots (12-6).
Smith (2-11) hosts Babson for a 1:00 p.m. New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup on Saturday. Simmons (4-5) entertains Johnson & Wales in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
