Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Smith College lacrosse team's 2014 campaign came to a close on Saturday with a 14-7 setback to league-leading Wheaton, who clinched the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season title earlier this week.
Jessica Lillquist (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and
Rachel Silveria (Dunstable, Mass./Groton-Dunstable) each netted a hat-trick for the Pioneers as
Petru Bester (Deep River, Conn./Valley Regional) tallied a pair of helpers.
Kate Detrick (Petaluma, Calif./Sonoma Academy) also pitched in with a goal. Silveria led the hosts with four ground balls, three caused turnovers and three draw controls.
Merric Kallfelz (North Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) piled on 13 more saves to finish with 168 on the year.
Leila Mills led Wheaton with four goals followed by Angela Mallis and Hannah Gasperoni with two apiece. Giovanna Bishop, Katherine Kowal, Melanie Sharick, Brooke Sabol, Anny Sokolova and Ava Myette all found the back of the net once. Sabol added three helpers as Bishop and Jenna Tewskbury doled out one each. Devon Soucier collected a game-best eight draw controls while Mills scooped up a quartet of ground balls. Katy Ananian stopped four shots for the Lyons.
It took nearly five minutes for Sharick to break the ice off a feed from Tweskbury. Wheaton struck again 22 seconds later for the 2-0 advantage. Lillquist cut the deficit in half with 20:34 showing on the scoreboard. Kowal and Lillquist then traded goals before Sokolova and Mallis each scored to give the Lyons a 5-2 lead with 7:42 left before the intermission. Silveria deposited her 15
th of the year at 4:46 while Gasperoni sent the Lyons into the break with a 6-3 margin with a marker at 3:15.
Wheaton scored the first five goals of the new half before Lillquist halted the outburst as she sent home a feed from Bester with 17:21 to play. After Sabol scored just over a minute later, the Pioneers scored three consecutive goals to get within five with 3:44 remaining. Myette added a tally at 2:36 while Gasperoni capped the scoring with less than a minute to go.

Wheaton hosts the winner of Wednesday's game between the fourth and fifth seed on Saturday at noon in the 2014 NEWMAC Women's Lacrosse Championship semifinals.
