Late Goal Lifts Lyons past Pioneers

September 27, 2014

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Junior forward Kelsey Harris (Spencer, Mass.) scored the only goal of the afternoon to give the Wheaton College field hockey team a 1-0 victory over host Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play Saturday.

The Lyons have won five of their last six matches and are now 7-2 on the season, including 1-1 in NEWMAC play. With the loss, the Pioneers dip to 1-6 and 0-2.

The Lyons' game-winning goal was scored with just 1:32 remaining in the contest. Senior forward Tracy McCann (Westerly, R.I.) fed the ball in from the right side which landed on Harris's stick, who pushed a commanding shot past the goalie for her team-best seventh goal of the season at the 68:28 mark.

Smith held the edge offensively, outshooting Wheaton 20-12, including 13 first-half shots while finishing with a 20-6 advantage in penalty corners. Lyons netminder Madison Wolters (Marstons Hills, Mass.) had a busy day in net, totaling ten saves. The Pioneer defense did a good job throughout the contest of stifling the Lyon attack before the ball could get to Pioneer goalkeeper Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), as the first-year from Massapequa, NY recorded four saves.

The Pioneers had a good opportunity to score in the 25th minute, as junior forward Kat Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) took a shot that beat the Wheaton keeper, but the Lyons picked up a big defensive save and directed the shot out of play.

Estes took a team-best four shots on goal, while junior forward Marissa Vara (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) (Hudson, Mass./Hudson) tallied four shots of her own.

The Pioneers will be in action again on Tuesday, September 30 when they travel to Boston, Mass. to take on Simmons College at 7 p.m., while Wheaton also plays on Sept. 30 when they host Johnson & Wales at 7 p.m.
