Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.--The Smith College basketball team saw its three game winning streak come to an end with a 67-53 loss at Babson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play Wednesday night.
Smith is now 4-7 overall, and 1-3 in the NEWMAC, while Babson improves to 7-5, and 3-1 against NEWMAC opponents.
The Pioneers were led by first-year
Stephanie Soto-Rivera (Chestnut Hill, Mass./Beaver Country Day School), who finished with 11 points and six rebounds. First-year
Samantha Alakai (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) and classmate
Paige Marquez (San Francisco, Calif./Saint Ignatius College Preparatory) each tallied 10 points, while fellow first-year
Amanda Barriscale (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) added eight points.
Linnett Graber (Roseland, N.J.) led a trio of Babson College players in double figures with 15 points and seven rebounds.
The Beavers never trailed, scoring the first five points of the contest. An Alakai layup got the Pioneers on the scoreboard, cutting Babson's early lead to three (5-2) with 18:15 to play. Another Alakai layup two minutes later kept the Beavers' lead at three, but Babson ripped off an 11-0 run over the next 5:03 to push their advantage to 14 (18-4) with 11:11 to play in the first half. Babson stretched their lead to 16 to take a 32-16 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Alakai scored on the Pioneers second possession out of the locker room to cut their deficit to 14, but the Beavers ripped off a 9-0 run to grab its biggest lead of the game at 41-18 on a layup by junior Jess Coelho (Westport, Conn.) with 14:54 to go in the game. Smith refused to go away quietly though, as it responded with a 16-4 spurt to cut the margin to 45-34 on a three-pointer by Marquez with 10:35 to play.
The Pioneers would get as close as 11 on four occasions before Babson increased its lead over the final 10 minutes. Eight points from Graber along with a layup from sophomore Jennifer Narlee (Medfield, Mass.) made it 58-40, and fellow sophomore Giovanna Pickering (Hull, Mass.) pushed the lead to 63-43 with a three-point play at the 5:03 mark.
The Pioneers shot just 34.5 percent (19-of-55), but did score 18 points off 24 Beavers' turnovers.
Smith returns to action on Saturday, when they host MIT for a 2 p.m. start.
