NORTHAMPTON, Mass.--The Smith College field hockey team (10-8) will host a conference tournament game for the first time since 1997 when the No. 3 seed Pioneers welcome the No. 6 seed Springfield College Pride (10-8) on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for seniors, and $1 for students (Smith students are free). Children under 12 are admitted free.
NEWMAC Field Hockey Tournament Digital ProgramBabson tabs the top seed after completing the regular season at 7-1 ranked #12 in the nation. Reigning conference champions, Wellesley will take the second seed after wrapping up the regular season at 7-1 ranked #8 in the most recent national poll. A tiebreaking procedure was done between Babson and Wellesley. Going head to head in the regular season the Beavers defeated the Blue giving Babson the top seed.
The two top seeds will receive a first round bye and advance to the semifinals which is slated for Saturday, November 7th at Babson College.
Rounding out the remaining seeds are #3 Smith (5-3), #4 MIT (5-3), #5 Mount Holyoke (5-3) and #6 Springfield (4-4). The NEWMAC Field Hockey tiebreaking procedure was used to determine the #3-#5 seeds as there was a three-way tie between Smith, MIT and Mount Holyoke.
Regular Season Meeting: Springfield posted a 2-0 win over Smith on October 24, 2015.
The Series: Springfield leads the all-time series 27-1-1. These two teams have met four times in the postseason, in 2000, 2001, 2004 and 2006. Smith's only win over the Pride was a 1-0 overtime victory on October 30, 2002.
