Erin Hanley (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Prep) came off the bench to score 11 points on 4-4 shooting but Smith was unable to stop Gill Gerton and Coast Guard Academy in a 59-45 conference opening loss Wednesday evening at Ainsworth Gymnasium.
Smith drops to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in NEWMAC play, while Coast Guard improves to 4-2, 2-0 NEWMAC.
Hanley added three rebounds, while teammate
Meghan Holland (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prepatory) added 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Paige Marquez (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Preparatory) and
Samantha Alakai (Pukalani, Hawaii/Punahou School) each finished with seven points for the Pioneers.
The Bears were led by Gerton who recorded a double-double of 13 points and 18 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end. Torie Sutherland finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and Jayla Joyner added 12 points, nine boards. The Pioneers held Meghan Fornaro, the NEWMAC's leading scorer, to just 10 points.
Smith jumped out to a 4-0 lead on layups from Holland and
Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, GA/The Lawrenceville School), but that was quickly answered by an 8-0 run from the visitors. A free throw from Joyner extended the Bears' lead to 11 (19-8) going into the second quarter.
After Michelle Hernandez gave Coast Guard a 14 point advantage, Smith ended the half on an 8-0 spurt, that ended with a Holland trey at the buzzer.
The Pioneers came as close as 50-43 in the fourth quarter on a
Lauren Bondi (Burnaby, BC, Can./Notre Dame Secondary) transition layup, but Coast Guard was able to control the rest of the game, outscoring Smith 9-2 over the last 3:02.
The Bears dominated the glass, outrebounding Smith, 53-31, including 31 on the offensive end. The Pioneers played well defending the three, limiting Coast Guard to 14.3 percent (2-14) from behind the arc.
Smith faces another tough test as they welcome Babson to Ainsworth Gymnasium Saturday at 2 p.m.
