Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The Smith College basketball team scored the first seven points of the game and led from start to finish in a 70-61 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) triumph Saturday afternoon at Wellesley College.
First-year guard
Meghan Holland (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prepatory) connected from beyond the arc on Smith's second possession, and first-year guard
Paige Marquez (San Francisco, Calif./Saint Ignatius College Preparatory) made back-to-back layups to put the Pioneers ahead 7-0 with 17:49 remaining in the first half.
Smith opened their largest lead just seconds before the end of the half, as junior forward
Tia Karapoulios (Cypress, Calif./Cypress) knocked down the three to put the Pioneers ahead, 39-23, with 35 seconds remaining.
Holland again opened the half with a three to give Smith their largest lead of the contest, 42-23, on the Pioneers' first possession of the second half. The Lyons got to within 10 on six separate occasions in the second half, pulling to within six, 66-60 on a layup by Kayla Jang with 48 seconds to play.
Holland and sophomore guard
Jade Chihara (Lahaina, Hawaii/Lahainaluna) each made a free-throw down the stretch, and first-year foward
Audrey Gibson (Pea Ridge, Ark./Haas Hall Academy) added a layup on a feed Chihara with 16 seconds to play that put Smith ahead for good, 70-61.
Smith was locked in from the get-go, shooting a season-high 62.96% (17-of-27) from the field in the opening 20 minutes of play. They also made a season-best 56.3% of their attempts from three, sinking 9-of-16 from behind the arc. Senior guard
Alyssa Barrett (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) led the way, going a perfect 4-for-4 from the field, including 3-for-3 from three and 2-of-2 from the charity stripe for 13 points in 16 minutes off the bench.
Holland finished with a team-high 15 points, while first-year forwards
Samantha Alakai (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) and
Amanda Barriscale (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) led Smith in assists (5) and rebounds (11), respectively. Four Pioneers scored in double-figures, including Alakai (11), Marquez (10), Holland and Barrett.
The Pioneers held a 35-31 edge in rebounding and a 27-17 advantage in bench points.
Smith ends the 2014-15 season riding a three-game winning streak. The Pioneers just narrowly missed sneaking into the NEWMAC Tournament by winning their final three contests, but Emerson College's 72-63 victory over Clark University gave the Lions the seventh, and final seed in the seven-team field.
