Pioneers Control Second Half in 5-1 Loss to #4 Middlebury

September 14, 2015

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - After the fourth-ranked Middlebury Panthers jumped out to a 5-0 first half lead, the Smith College Field Hockey Team lit the scoreboard just 3:20 into the second half and controlled possession and the run of play over the final 35 minutes in a 5-1 loss on Monday.

Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass./Deerfield Academy)'s first goal of the season came on a penalty corner as an initial shot by Casey Rau (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) was redirected in front of Middlebury goalkeeper Emily Miller by Elsie Odhiambo (Oyugis, Kenya/Kisumu Girls School).  The ball deflected onto the stick of Hamilton, who lifted into the empty cage.

The Pioneers nearly scored a second goal just five minutes later when another corner was slammed home by Odhiambo after Rau's shot from the top was stopped by Miller.  But the play was called back after it was ruled that the ball had hit a Smith foot before the shot.

Smith's back line of Kat Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth), Beatrice Chaudoin (Millersville, MD/Severna Park), and Raegan Stokes (Watertown, CT/Kent School) continued to hold Middlebury and Smith maintained possession in the attacking third, winning penalty corners in the 60th, 61st, and 62nd minutes.  In the 62nd, Bayleigh Bogan (Encinitas, CA/La Costa Canyon) was denied her first collegiate goal when Miller kicked out her blast off of the insertion.

Middlebury opened the scoring in the sixth minute on a when Pam Schulman found the back of the cage on an assist from Bridget Instrum.  Three minutes later, Schulman scored her second of the game, deflecting an Instrum shot from the top of the circle.

Annie Leonard, Grace Jennings, and Instrum finished the scoring for the Panthers, Instrum's goal on a feed from the right wing by Schulman.

Nora Demick (Watertown, Mass/Beaver Country Day) played the opening 35 in the Smith goal, making six saves.  Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) guarded the Pioneer net in the second half, kicking aside two Middlebury efforts.

After taking two shots in the first half, the Pioneers fired five in the second while holding Middlebury, a defending national-semifinalist, to four.  Smith also earned seven penalty corners, five in the second half, the most penalty corners won by a Panther opponent since October 11, 2014.

Monday marked the first time since September 25, 2013 that a non-conference opponent outshot Middlebury in a half, and by holding Middlebury without a goal in the second half, Smith joined Skidmore as the only regular-season non-conference opponent to do so since October 20, 2010.

The Pioneers return to action on Wednesday when they travel to New London, Conn. to take on Connecticut College.  The opening whistle is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
