NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - In their final match before the 2015 ITA Northeast Regionals, hosted by Middlebury College, Mount Holyoke defeated the Smith College Tennis Team 9-0 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Tuesday.
Margaret Anne Smith (Spring Lake, N.J./High Technology) faught a valiant match against Ishita Tibrewal at third singles, falling in the first set 7-5 before sweeping the second set at love. In the third superset, the pair battled back and forth with Tibrewal edging out Smith by the slimmest of margins, 10-8.
Smith's marathon match came after the Lyons opened play with a doubles sweep. Ayame Yazawa and Margaux Holloschutz closed out an 8-3 win over Smith and partner Samantha Peikes (West Hartford, Conn./Watkinson School), while Alexa Colas and Tibrewal knocked off Smith's Noa Dubin (Southampton, N.Y./Southampton) and Morgan Barney (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) 8-2 at second doubles. In the third slot, the Lyons' pair of Madison Rosen and Amy Chen were victorious 8-1 over Joanna Kim (Chicago, IL) and Annina Van Riper (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) for the Pioneers.
In singles play, Dubin lined up against Yazawa, who improved to 4-1 in singles play on the season with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over the Smith first-year. Holloschultz was a 6-0, 6-4 winner over Peikes at second singles, with Barney dropping a 6-0, 6-1 decision to Colas at four and Kim falling 6-1, 6-0 to Clara Wang at five. In the sixth position, Michelle Cai defeated Van Riper 6-2, 6-1.
The Pioneers return to the court on Friday at the ITA Northeast Regionals which run through Sunday. NEWMAC play resumes on Tuesday when Springfield visits Northampton for a 4 p.m. start.
