Box Score NORTON, Mass. - First-year Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, GA/The Lawrenceville School) recorded her fifth double-double of the season as Smith went on the road and defeated Wheaton, 77-74 Saturday in a NEWMAC women's basketball contest.
Wheaton senior Kiley Shoemaker led all players with 26 points on an 8-10 performance from the floor and 10-11 showing from the free-throw line. The highlight of the night however was the senior pulling down six rebounds which moved her to 851 on her career, taking down the previous record of 849.
Rebecca Arnone netted 15 points for Wheaton, whle Ruthie Zientek had 12 and Jill Bodreau knocked down 11. Arnone led the Lyons in rebounds with eight, while Oppie Morris collected seven.
Guest-Pritchett led the Pioneers with 22 points on a 10-22 night from the floor. She also pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds for the contests only double-double.
Lauren Bondi (Burnaby, BC, Can./Notre Dame Secondary) also finished in double-figures scoring wih 16 points and
Paige Marquez (San Francisco, Calif./St. Ignatius College Preparatory) ended the contest with 12. Sophomore guard
Amanda Barriscale (Mill Valley, Calif./Tamalpais) tied her season-high with eight points in addition to pulling down eight boards.
Wheaton's only lead of the game came at the 9:08 mark in the first quarter when Arnone drained a three-pointer to make it a 3-2 contest. Smith quickly responded, capturing a seven points, 18-11, lead with 3:57 to go courtesy of a Bondi three. Trailing 25-20 heading into the second quarter, the Lyons opened on a 5-1 run that brought them within a point of the Pioneers. Smith once again had an answer, running up a nine point advantage over the next six minutes with the help of eight points from Guest-Pritchett and five from Marquez.
Smith continued to push the pace of play in the third quarter, going on to earn its largest lead at the 6:33 mark on a Guest-Pritchett three-pointer, making it a 49-36 contest. Despite trailing by double-digits the Lyons were not out of the contest. It took nearly three minutes for either team to get on the board in the fourth quarter with
Meghan Holland (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prepatory) breaking the scoring drought at the 7:47 mark with a made free-throw for the Pioneers. Wheaton responded just seconds later with a layup by Shoemaker that sparked a 15-5 run for the Lyons, pulling them within a point with 2:57 left to play.
The final 2:57 was a tough back and forth battle with each side matching each other basket for basket.
The Pioneers improve to 6-8 overall and 3-4 in conference, while the Lyons fall to 10-6 on the season and 3-4 in the NEWMAC.
Smith returns to the hardwood Tuesday for a non-conference matchup at Middlebury at 5 p.m.
