Pioneers Race Past Mount Holyoke, 80-31

Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Smith College women's basketball team shot 51.6 percent from the field on their way to an 80-31  New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over Mount Holyoke College basketball on Wednesday evening at Ainsworth Gymnasium.
This was the 70th meeting between these two schools in a series that Smith now leads 42-28.
The Pioneers improve to 7-9 on the season and 4-4 in NEWMAC games. Mount Holyoke drops to 0-16 overall and 0-8 in league play. 
First-year Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, GA/The Lawrenceville School) finished in double figures for the fifth consecutive game to lead the Pioneers with 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting and seven rebounds and two assists. First-year guard Lauren Bondi (Burnaby, BC, Can./Notre Dame Secondary) poured in 15 points, including three treys, while junior guard Jade Chihara (Lahaina, Hawaii/Lahainaluna) added seven points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals. First-year Katy McClellan (Palmyra, PA/Palmyra Area) set a new career-high with five boards. 

Genelle Green led the Lyons offense with 20 points and five rebounds, while Kelly Stewart added five points, three rebounds and two steals.

The Pioneers raced out to a 17-5 lead at the end of the first as Meghan Holland (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prepatory) drained a three with 25 seconds left in the quarter.

A good jumper from Carrie Lee Lancaster (York, SC/York Comprehensive) ignited a 16-2 run throughout the second quarter, giving Smith a 33-9 lead with 2:39 remaining in the second quarter. A Bondi three-pointer with 35 seconds left sent the Pioneers into the lockeroom with a 36-12 lead. 

Bondi set the tone for Smith in the third quarter, shredding through the Lyons defense for a layup to spark a 13-2 run in the opening 4:43 of the third. 

Smith continued to add to their lead in the fourth quarter, taking their largest advantage of the evening, at 74-25, with 3:28 left in regulation on Mandy Castro (San Diego, Calif./Poway)'s shot from long distance. From there, the Pioneers closed out the 80-31 victory. 


Smith out-rebounded the Lyons 40-25 and racked up 21 assists to just four for Mount Holyoke.

Both teams will continue NEWMAC play on Saturday afternoon. Smith will host MIT at 2 p.m., while MHC plays at Wheaton at 1 p.m.
