Box Score NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - MIT shot 62.07 percent in the first half en route to a 66-34 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory over Smith College Saturday afternoon at Ainsworth Gymnasium.
With the win, MIT moves to 13-4 on the season and 8-1 in NEWMAC play while Smith falls to 7-10 overall and 4-5 in conference tilts.Â
Senior guard Sabrina Drammis scored 14 of her game-high 18 points in the 1st quarter as her layup with 21 seconds left on the clock gave the Engineers a 20-9 advantage heading into the second period. MIT extended their lead as they outscored the Pioneers 21-3 in the second to go into halftime ahead 41-12.Â
The Smith defense came out much more aggressive in the second half, forcing eight turnovers and limited the potent MIT offense to only 32 percent from the field. A 5-0 run on a three-pointer from
Lauren Bondi (Burnaby, BC, Can./Notre Dame Secondary) and layup from
Meghan Holland (Atherton, Calif./Sacred Heart Prepatory) forced an Engineer timeout midway through the fourth quarter but MIT regrouped to come out on top.Â
Smith was led by Holland's 14 points and four rebounds. First-year forward
Kennedy Guest-Pritchett (Fairburn, GA/The Lawrenceville School) recorded six points and four boards while Bondi added five points, three rebounds and two steals.Â
Drammis added eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks while senior forward Maya Ramachandran finished with 13 points and eight boards. Liana Ilutzi produced a game-high six assists for the Engineers as 10 different MIT players scored.Â
Both teams return to the hardwood on Wednesday, January 27th. Smith travels to Coast Guard Academy for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off and MIT hosts Babson at 8 p.m.
